Patient Rights and Responsibilities

Based on our principles and policies, Kumamoto University Hospital respects the rights of patients and strives to provide high quality, safe medical care. At the same time, we ask that patients consider their own responsibilities to maintain positive relationships between patients and medical professionals and to ensure patients are able to recuperate.

Patient Rights

  • We respect your personal wishes and dignity.
  • You have the right to fair, quality medical care.
  • You have the right to receive adequate explanation and information.
  • You have the right to consent to or refuse medical treatment according to your own wishes.
  • You may request the opinion of a doctor from another medical facility regarding your symptoms and treatment plan (second opinion)
  • We shall offer communication via suitable means for those who may have difficulty expressing themselves (e.g., young children, elderly patients)
  • Your privacy and personal information will be protected.

Patient Responsibilities

  • Please give us an accurate description of your health condition.
  • Please participate actively in medical treatment.
  • Please follow social rules, the regulations of Kumamoto University Hospital, and the instructions of the staff.
  • Do not cause trouble for others.
    (Regarding troublesome behavior, please refer to the About Troublesome Behavior section of our website. Specifically, this includes abusive language, violence, damage to property, etc.)
  • Please pay your medical fees on time.
  • As a dedicated medical institution for referral priority medical care, we cooperate with local medical institutions to provide appropriate care. Please understand a referral is required and that you may be referred to another institution.
  • Kumamoto University Hospital is an educational and research hospital. We ask for your cooperation as we educate medical professionals, conduct research to develop new treatments, etc.
